Description

The Devilbiss Oxymizer Oxygen Conserver is a clinically proven oxygen-conserving cannula designed for patients requiring supplemental oxygen therapy. Its unique reservoir pendant stores oxygen during exhalation and delivers a concentrated bolus at the start of each breath — significantly reducing oxygen consumption compared to traditional continuous-flow cannulas.

Specifications of Devilbiss Oxymizer Oxygen Conserver

How it Works

Both the pendant- and mustache-style models feature an oxygen-storage reservoir. The reservoir functions similarly in both models.

Pendant Model (P-224)

The reservoir is contained in a hard plastic circle-shaped chamber that rests on a patient’s chest, under their clothing — discreet and comfortable for everyday wear

Mustache Model (O-224)

The reservoir is contained in a chamber in the facepiece that sits directly under a patient’s nose — an alternative for different patient preferences.

1. Exhalation — oxygen is captured – Upon exhalation, the reservoir is thrust forward, creating a chamber that stores oxygen for the next breath.

2. Inhalation — enriched bolus delivered – Upon inhalation, the membrane is drawn toward the patient, delivering a bolus of 80–100% pure oxygen in addition to continuous flow.

3. Less oxygen, same saturation – By storing oxygen during exhalation and delivering an enriched bolus on inhalation, the Oxymizer® requires significantly less oxygen than a standard cannula.

Oxygen Conservation

The Oxymizer® can achieve a savings ratio of up to 4:1. It allows you to decrease your patient’s liter flow while providing adequate oxygen saturation.

For example, if a patient requires a 2 lpm setting, the Oxymizer® allows you to lower the flow to 0.5 lpm without compromising oxygenation. This represents an oxygen savings of 75%.

By storing oxygen during exhalation and delivering an enriched bolus on inhalation, the Oxymizer® requires less oxygen than a standard cannula.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Devilbiss Oxymizer Oxygen Conserver and how is it different from a regular cannula?

The DeVilbiss Oxymizer is an oxygen-conserving cannula with a built-in reservoir that stores oxygen during exhalation. Unlike a regular cannula that delivers oxygen continuously — even during exhalation when it is wasted — the Oxymizer captures and stores that oxygen, then delivers an enriched bolus of 80–100% pure oxygen at the start of each inhalation. This makes it far more efficient.

What is the difference between the Pendant model and the Mustache model?

The Pendant model (P-224) has its reservoir in a hard plastic circle-shaped chamber that rests on the patient’s chest, under clothing — making it very discreet. The Mustache model (O-224) has its reservoir in a facepiece that sits directly under the patient’s nose. Both models work the same way; the choice depends on patient comfort and preference.

Who should use the Oxymizer?

The Oxymizer is ideal for patients who require long-term supplemental oxygen therapy — especially those who are active or mobile. It is particularly beneficial for patients looking to extend the life of their oxygen cylinders or reduce oxygen consumption without compromising their saturation levels.

How much oxygen can the Oxymizer save?

The Oxymizer can achieve a savings ratio of up to 4:1 compared to a standard cannula. For example, a patient who needs 2 lpm with a standard cannula may only need 0.5 lpm with the Oxymizer — representing a 75% reduction in oxygen use, while still maintaining adequate oxygen saturation.

Is the Oxymizer compatible with my existing oxygen system?

Yes. The DeVilbiss Oxymizer is compatible with standard oxygen delivery systems including oxygen concentrators, cylinders, and liquid oxygen systems. No special equipment or adapters are required.
